Report to the Community

The people we serve are at the heart of our mission. That's because Commonwealth Health Corporation (CHC), parent company of The Medical Center at Bowling Green, Franklin and Scottsville, is a not-for-profit healthcare provider. Every year, we contribute millions to benefit the health and wellness of our communities.

As a not-for-profit healthcare system, CHC provides a benefit to the community that is greater than the taxes we would pay if we were a private, for-profit business. Whether it is cutting edge technology at The Medical Center, physician clinics in rural areas, or free medical care at Commonwealth Health Free Clinic, our commitment to our community shines through in ways that cannot be measured by dollars alone.

Benefits to the Community

In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2012, CHC provided $64.5 million in total benefits to our communities. Part of that benefit is over $12.9 million in charity care for those with limited incomes and little or no health insurance. Because Medicare and Medicaid do not reimburse hospitals for the full cost of providing services, CHC absorbed over $23.1 million in Medicare shortfalls and nearly $7.5 million in Medicaid shortfalls.

  • $12,928,094 - Charity Care

  • $7,497,509 - Unpaid Cost of Medicaid

  • $4,835,594 - Community Health Improvement

  • $3,05,244 - Health Professionals Education

  • $5,029,384 - Subsidized Health Services

  • $116,557 - Cash & In-kind Contributions

  • $23,132,132 - Unpaid Cost of Medicare

  • $6,018,420 - Bad Debt Expense

  • $1,340,668 - Community Building Activities

Although our 2012 Community Benefit Report attempts to quantify the amount we give back to the people we serve, it is about much more than numbers. The true impact of our support to the community is felt beyond our hospital campuses and clinics. It reaches into the homes and lives of those we serve.
