Classes

OB EDUCATION CLASS SERIES

The Medical Center offers a variety of classes which will help you and your families learn the things necessary to make your hospital stay stress reduced and give your baby the best start in life. We suggest that each family take a group of core classes and any additional ones that you desire. The core classes we suggest are:

Prepared Childbirth Class
Breast is Best
Newborn Care and Safety
Ready, Set, Go!!

For questions or additional information, please call (270) 796-2495. You may register for classes through this website. All classes will meet in the Auditorium unless otherwise noted. All classes are free of charge.

 

Note: In the event of severe weather conditions, please call (270) 796-2495 after 4:00 PM the day of the class (Saturdays after 7:00 AM) to find out if the class has been cancelled.

 

PRENATAL CLASSES

PREPARED CHILDBIRTH CLASS - OPTION I

This 5-week course covers information on preparing for labor and delivery. Breathing, relaxation, concentration, medication options and cesarean information are included. Breast is Best, Fatherhood 101, and Grandparents class are included in this series.

PREPARED CHILDBIRTH CLASS - OPTION II

This one-night refresher Childbirth class will review labor, delivery, breathing and relaxation. It is for those who have taken a previous Childbirth series class.

PREPARED CHILDBIRTH CLASS - OPTION III

The 5-week Childbirth series is condensed and covered in one day. Snacks and drinks are provided; lunch is not provided but participants are welcome to bring lunch and eat during class. This fast paced, intensive day filled with information is for those unable to attend the 5-week series. Participants in this class will need to register for the Breast is Best, Fatherhood 101, and Grandparents class separately.

A NEW BABY’S COMING CLASS

This is a class for siblings ages 3 and up to help prepare them for the arrival of the new baby. A tour of the obstetrics (OB) unit and a view of the nursery are included with light refreshments and a video. When registering each sibling, please list their age separately. Participants should bring a doll or stuffed animal.

BREAST IS BEST

Breastmilk is the perfect nutrition for your baby. Breastmilk also helps protect your baby from viruses adn bacteria. Tips on how to successfully breastfeed the newborn will be discussed. This class is for those not enrolled in the 5-week Childbirth class. ,Bring Dad to class, as well as a doll or stuffed animal. This class is taught by Lactation Consultant Connie Dickson, APRN, NP-C, IBCLC, RLC.

C-SECTION CLASS

This class offers a video and discussion on what to expect and how to prepare for returning home with your baby after cesarean surgery. Those in the 5-week childbirth class do not need to register for this class.

FATHERHOOD 101

This class is taught by George Miller, R.N., a nursery nurse at The Medical Center. He will discuss new father concerns with regard to responsibilities and relationship changes with baby and mom. George's insight and suggestions will help Dad in his new role. This class is for those who are not enrolled in the 5-week Childbirth class. For men only!

GRANDPARENTS CLASS

On the fifth night of the Childbirth 5-week series, expectant grandparents are invited to attend class with expectant parents. A pediatrician will be at class to discuss newborns and answer questions about caring for an infant.

NEWBORN CARE AND SAFETY CLASS

This is a "hands-on" class where parents will learn important baby care skills and discuss safety issues for newborns. An infant CPR demonstration will show parents what to do in an emergency. Bring a doll or stuffed animal to class. Dad can bring one, too.

As a special incentive for attending a Newborn Care and Safety Class, you will receive a safety bag with several baby safety items tucked inside. In addition, one lucky couple will walk away with a great door prize. This Health & Safety Program is made possible through a grant from Kohl’s Cares®. One hundred percent of the net profit from the sale of $5 plush toys and books at the Bowling Green Kohl's store funds the grant.

NUTRITION DURING PREGNANCY

Eating smart is important during pregnancy. Learn about recommended weight gain and how to make healthy choices, including food high in nutrients such as protein, calcium, iron and folic acid. Join us to learn which foods to eat and which to avoid. A valuable class for your pregnancy. This class is taught by Linda Howsen, RD, LD.

READY, SET, GO!

Designed for all patients who plan to deliver at The Medical Center, this class will guide you through the paperwork that is required when you are admitted to The Medical Center for delivery. You will have an opportunity to preregister for labor and delivery. By attending this class, you will be better prepared for your admission and discharge from the hospital. There are many decisions you will need to make while in the hospital. A tour of the OB unit will also be provided.

TWINS OR MORE!

This class will explore how to prepare for twins, triplets, or quads and will cover issues you will face that create a challenge for new moms and dads. Support networks will also be discussed. This class is led by Tracy Wheeler, RN, a nursery nurse at The Medical Center and a mother of twins.
