Summer Produce Tips
Enjoying summer produce starts with knowing what to buy and when. Follow these tips to help select the freshest fruits and vegetables this season.
For melons, cantaloupe should have pronounced netting on the rind and a few tiny cracks at the stem and should smell sweet. Smell is also a good measure for honeydew and watermelon. Peaches should be slightly soft to the touch and yellow or cream-colored. For berries, choose plump, firm ones with a bright color.
For vegetables, look for corn that has green husks and silks free of decay and tomatoes that are smooth and firm but not hard. Bell peppers should be firm, bright and have smooth skin.
Look for locally grown, in-season produce for enhanced flavor and nutrient levels.
