The Medical Center at Bowling Green (MCBG) will serve as the primary clinical teaching site for the majority of the General Surgery program’s required clinical and educational experiences. To supplement this educational experience, residents will complete the following one month rotations at The University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center (UK): Pediatric Surgery, Transplant, Surgical Oncology, and Trauma.

During the second and third years of the residency program, residents will spend a cumulative total of four months at UK. During the PGY-2 year, residents will complete a two month block consisting of a one-month Pediatric Surgery rotation and a one-month Transplant rotation. During the PGY-3 year, residents will complete a two month block consisting of a one-month Surgical Oncology rotation and a one-month Trauma rotation.

With regard to the Pediatric Surgery and Transplant rotations, the rationale for inclusion in the curriculum is to augment resident education in these specialty areas and ensure each learner has the opportunity to exceed minimum case log requirements in this areas.

With regard to the Surgical Oncology and Trauma educational rotations, MCBG’s current case mix is adequate to provide exposure to required educational content as well as a majority of the required operative cases excluding liver and pancreas cases. UK rotations in these areas are designed to enhance our residents’ educational experience through providing additional exposure to complex surgical oncology and trauma cases.

Skills/Simulation Lab training sessions will be incorporated into the curriculum throughout the entire program. Throughout the first two years of the program, surgery residents will be taken through the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) Resident Skills Curriculum at The Medical Center-WKU Health Sciences Complex and in a designated room at The Medical Center where the Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS) trainer box and other practice instruments will be housed.
